Puzzle 4 Independence Hall

repeating pattern of small keyholes with a larger keyhole in the center

Historic brick. You’ve always hated historic brick. Just trying to walk without injuring yourself on historic brick is a puzzle in itself. They’re bricks that have forgotten their sacred mission: to fit together into a greater whole.

Teddy, to your right, appears utterly unfazed by the rough terrain.

“ … Been in the Department of Treasure Hunts my whole career, really. Have learned a whole lot about, y’know, maps. Digging things up. Putting pieces together …”

You’re listening, but you’re also on the lookout for a silver envelope. It’d have to be somewhere fairly obvious …

You catch a glint of silver out of the corner of your eye. There, on the statue of John Barry. You take a step toward your target and immediately feel yourself start to careen toward the ground.

The historic brick knew to strike when you were at your most unguarded.

Yet right before the ground prepares to make its acquaintance with your face, an arm reaches out and grabs your shoulder, hoisting you upright again.

A few days ago, you would have been dimly amazed to find yourself helped by Teddy again. But these days you’re finding him a bit more … reliable.

“Evading booby traps is part of the Treasure Hunt training too, huh?” you say coolly, assuming your gratitude is implied. He laughs and looks a bit abashed, like he isn’t sure what to say.

The two of you make it to the statue and retrieve the envelope from where it was stored. Before opening it, though, your brow furrows.

“Why John Barry?” you ask aloud. This statue, out of all of them, seems something of an odd choice. Why not the statue of Washington, or the other statue of Washington, or that plaque commemorating all the revolutionaries but especially Washington? You go through the standard checklist: “John Barry” starts with a J, “John Barry” has a double R, “JOHNBARRY” has nine letters …

Then you notice one more thing: John Barry is pointing. You turn around and follow the path from his finger.

Great. More brick.
